Heel Pain Q & A
What is heel pain?
Heel pain refers to pain or discomfort on the underside and back of your foot. The heel is where you bear the bulk of your weight when walking, so heel pain can often prevent you from walking normally and can lead to other problems with your ankles, legs, hips, and low back.
Heel pain is one of the most common foot problems seen by podiatrists. Heel pain usually originates in one of two places: Behind the heel bone or beneath the heel bone.
Heel pain can feel mild and resolve on its own, or the cause can be a chronic problem that needs treatment for relief. Your prognosis and treatment plan depends on the underlying cause of your heel pain.
What is the cause of my heel pain?
The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis, which is inflammation of the tendon that supports the arch of your foot. The plantar fascia is anchored to the heel bone. When the fascia is irritated, it can cause severe heel pain, especially with the first steps in the morning.
Other causes of heel pain include:
- Achilles tendonitis, inflammation of the Achilles tendon
- Plantar fascia rupture
- Bursitis, inflammation of the heel bone
- A heel spur, often the result of plantar fasciitis
- Stone bruise
- Neuropathy or nerve damage
- Heel fracture
- A malformed or deformed heel bone
The podiatric specialists at Premier Foot & Ankle use X-ray and other diagnostic tools to determine the underlying cause of your heel pain.
What are the treatments for heel pain?
Depending on the underlying cause of your heel pain, your Premier Foot & Ankle podiatrist may suggest a combination of treatments including:
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Steroid injections
- Physical therapy
- At-home exercises and stretches
- Ice therapy
- Custom orthotics
- Braces or splints
- Shoe inserts
They are proud to also offer advanced, noninvasive or minimally invasive treatments, such as:
- Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology (EPAT®)
- PodiaTherm™ radiofrequency therapy
- Multiwave locked system (MLS) laser therapy
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy
If conservative treatment is not effective, the podiatrists at Premier Foot & Ankle are highly skilled at performing a variety of surgical procedures that help to relieve your heel pain.
