Premier Foot & Ankle Explains Achilles Tendonitis

Tendon injuries are common, as many major tendons are located in "watershed" areas. Watershed areas are parts of the body that don't receive much blood flow. The achilles tendon is located in a watershed area of the ankle. Thus the achilles heel is prone to tendonitis since it does not receive as much healing blood flow. Achilles tendonitis commonly occurs in older people because tendons lose flexibility with age.  Though many amateur athletes are also diagnosed with achilles tendonitis as well.

Achilles Tendonitis Symptoms

  • Stiffness
  • Pain

Achilles tendonitis is generally characterized by moderate to severe pain in the back of the ankle. The condition is felt immediately after beginning activity for the day and after resuming activity after a rest period. Discomfort associated with achilles tendonitis is felt most when jumping or pushing.

Diagnosis of Achilles Tendonitis

Diagnosis begins with a physical examination. Afterwards you may undergo an X-ray or an MRI.

Treatment of Achilles Tendonitis

A mild case of achilles tendonitis can be treated with rest and doctor prescribed anti-inflammatory medication. Though orthotics may be prescribed in cases of overpronation. Severe cases may require surgery.

If you're experiencing discomfort due to achilles tendonitis, request an appoint with Premier Foot & Ankle with locations in Plano, TX and McKinney, TX.
